| History of the Stoneware
The present high quality of the pottery comes from centuries of work by
European artisans. Pottery has long been crafted in the same area of present-day
Poland because of rich deposits of kaolin—fine
white clay. The area has been occupied by Germans, Russians, and now Poles,
which explains the multi-cultural appeal of the stoneware. Farmers originally
made pottery in the winter, when it was too cold for outside work, for use in
their own kitchens. The first designs were inspired by the peacock feather and
earth tones, primarily using the colors of cobalt blue, sage green, and brick
red.
The Process
This fine stoneware is made of white clay, fired at temperatures in excess of
1350 degrees centigrade. The high firing temperature insures that this pottery
is extremely durable and will not crack or chip easily. Today, artists decorate
these pieces using the same unique punch or stamp technique used for centuries.
Each piece of pottery is crafted as a singular work of art and retains the charm
of old masterpieces. Highly accomplished artisans earn the privilege of creating
their own work to best showcase their talents. They sign this work and it is
stamped "UNIKAT." Translated, this means simply "unique."
UNIKAT pieces are rarer and more artistic in design, therefore command higher
prices.
